LE DANCE PARENTS/STUDENTS – Please take the time to READ the below information regarding our "in house" convention UNMASKED. They have sent a very detailed description of what this convention will entail, and it is much more "personal" than any convention we have ever attended. With that said, PLEASE read thru and make sure you child is aware of what will take place. Miss Liz will also go thru this on Wednesday/Thursday of next week prior to the convention starting on Friday, Jan 5. IF you read thru , and have specific questions, please feel free to email Miss Liz.
This is going to be VERY fun, and unique for our students.
What a great way to start the NEW YEAR !!!

UNMASKED Audition Intensive is an innovative, in-house audition workshop customized for your studio and designed to help guide young dancers toward a more successful audition experience. Our mission is to provide each student with the opportunity to learn how to present themselves at any audition; empower dancers to project confidence through their artistry; learn a variety of skill sets to help each dancer enjoy the audition experience.
Photo/Headshot
A headshot should be a true representation of your look and reflect how you present yourself at an audition. Most casting agents want to see you as a blank slate that they can create a pre-determined character with. It is advantageous to present yourself as naturally as possible so directors, choreographers and casting agents can easily imagine you in the role of their choosing.
Please consider these helpful guidelines when preparing for your photo shoot.
• Bring several items of clothing to choose from. Headshots are focused on your face and upper body. Be sure to avoid busy prints, stripes or images that will pull focus from your face. A solid color shirt is best.
• Your face is the star of the photo so do not wear any jewelry or other items that will distract from your eyes and face. This means you should refrain from including earrings, necklaces, headbands or any other accessories in your photo look. • Please be thoughtful when applying make-up and deciding on a hair style for this photo. Hair and make-up should be natural looking and mirror how you might present yourself at an audition. Keep it simple. Fake lashes, dramatic stage make-up, detailed hair styles, and hair accessories are NOT appropriate for a headshot. Those considering your headshot want to know how long your hair is, and what color it is. Usually hair down and styled appropriately is the best choice. Buns, hairpieces, and pony tails are all NOT appropriate for a headshot.
Interview/Solo Preview
For this interview we will ask several questions that will allow the audition panel to get to know your personality. These questions may be dance related but could include topics regarding school, family, or life experience.
Remember to be yourself and answer in an honest thoughtful way.
Try to avoid one word answers and remember that this is your opportunity to show your personality.
After your brief interview you will have the opportunity to preview a solo of your choosing for the audition panel. You may want to show only a portion of your solo or the entire routine but please be thoughtful about what you choose to present to the audition panel. IF you do not have a solo, you may improv to a music choice you supply OR show a portion of a group dance that highlights your style OR you may simply decline, by saying "I do not have a solo at this time.".
This is your opportunity to show us your personal style and how you choose to express yourself as an artist.
Immediately following your performance, the audition panel will offer feedback to help you take your solo game to the next level.
Here are some guidelines to help you prepare for your Solo Preview. • It is not necessary to wear a costume for this portion of the audition. Simple Dancewear is more than sufficient.
• Please bring your music for your presentation on a CD or media device such as a cell phone, tablet, iPad or iPod. Please do not attempt to play your music directly from the internet through applications such as YouTube or Spotify. Be prepared and have your music ready to play regardless of whether or not there is an internet connection.
• Be open to feedback and remember that your audition panel is there to help guide you.
Sample Audition Questions:
– What excites you most about a career as a dancer? – What is your strongest style of dance? Why? – When you’re not dancing, what do you like to do? Hobbies? – What is your training and background in dance? – Tell me about yourself? (should be a 2-3 minute snapshot of themselves and why they are the best candidate for the job) – Where do you see yourself in 5 years? – If your fellow dancers where here right now, what would they say about you? – What are your goals as a dancer? – Why did you get into dancing? – Tell us something we don’t know about you from your resume? – What gives you inspiration? – What is your greatest strength? – What would you say is a weakness you have? – Three words to describe yourself – What individual has had the greatest influence on you? – Do you have any questions? (they should always have a question to stand out from the crowd and show they did their homework about the company/job)
Audition Classes
Audition classes will give you the opportunity to show proficiency in several different styles of dance with a predetermined hypothetical job attached to each audition class. This will help you narrow your focus and attach your performance to a specific type of project.
Each class will consist of a breakdown of what type of opportunity you are auditioning for. After the choreographer has taught the combination, dancers will present the material in small groups for evaluation.
Each class will also include a ‘Callback’ where several students will be called to dance again for the audition panel.
Please note the following breakdown of classes so you can be prepared and bring the appropriate outfits, shoes and/or accessories.
For all auditions please wear a basic black dance outfit. Avoid items with logos or recognizable graphics.
Some auditions may require additional items.
Tap This audition is for a Broadway musical revival. Please wear tap shoes.
Musical Theater This audition is for a live musical theatre production to be filmed and aired on live television. Please wear all black and have hair back and out of face. Juniors may wear jazz shoes. Seniors are encouraged to wear character heels (Jazz shoes if you do not currently own a pair of character shoes).
Contemporary This audition is for a new international dance company.
Jazz :This audition is for back-up dancers for a pop star performance on an awards show. Please wear a bright, colorful top that stands out. Juniors please have hair in a ponytail. Seniors please have hair down.
Improv This audition is for a national commercial.
Feedback Session
Following the completion of the audition classes, each student will have a private feedback session with the audition panel. This brief meeting serves to address areas of proficiency, as well as describe ways in which each student can improve their audition experience. This feedback is designed to help reinforce the strategies and guidance provided during classes and to provide a detailed evaluation for each dancer.
